For the second time in two years, the Leander School District is home to a new stadium. John Gupton Stadium is set to open August 27th, and will serve as a central stadium for Leander’s five high schools. The stadium is named after John Gupton who worked for the school district for over 21 years. The new stadium will include many features that the A.C. Bible Stadium has, which was renovated just last year. Similarities between the stadiums include both accommodating 10,200 people, similar sound systems, and the same type of turf.
John Gupton Stadium will stand out as being different from the others by having surveillance cameras near bus parking and other isolated parking areas, and no ramps to climb to get into the stands. The funding of the $22.5 million stadium is part of the 2007 bond package. The A.C. Bible Stadium was also part of the 2007 bond package.
The A.C. Bible stadium, named after former long-time School Board Trustee Arthur Calvin Bible Jr., was completely demolished and rebuilt in just 294 days last year. Mr. Bible served as a school trustee board member from 1975-1988, during which time bleachers for the stadium were bought, earning him recognition by having the stadium named after him.
